Giving
We rely entirely on donations, mostly from people currently involved with the Christian Union, but also from churches and former members.
"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7
This is a short section of a longer passage about Christian giving which is definitely worth a read, but it highlights a few things which are helpful to remember. We should make an informed decision about our giving, both how much to give and who to give it to. It's also a decision to be made in the privacy of your own heart. Lastly, this verse isn't saying "You must be cheerful." Instead, if giving seems a bit legalistic or just something you 'should' do, then you've missed the point. Paul goes on to say about how giving is an expression of our thanks to God. It's not an attempt to earn favours from God.
If you decide not to give to the Christian Union, then please still pray for our finances. We trust God will provide for the financial needs of the Christian Union.
Our finances
We don't receive funding from the university, the students union or UCCF. Instead, we are funded entirely by donations. We spend the money we receive in the following ways:
- Speakers' Costs - we give each of our speakers a small gift, and pay for their travel expenses.
- Alpha & Other Courses - need speakers, course materials, publicity and food.
- Evangelistic Events - for example, The Easter Event, Hot Potatoes and Jazz Cafes.
- International events - we support the work of the International Team.
- Publicity - posters and flyers for all our events cost money.
- Giving We invest a proportion of our funds to support other Christian student work and to support Christian charities and projects in the UK and worldwide.
Giving by cash or cheque
If you want to give by cash or cheque (payable to 'UYCU'), you can put them in the blue giving tin that is at the side of the room at most Saturday meetings, or give them to any of the committee who will pass it on.
Giving by standing order
A standing order is an instruction to your bank to make a regular gift every month, quarter or year. You can find a form from Micheal Hailes (CU Treasurer) at most Saturday meetings, or email him to get one.
If you'd like more information about either how to give or how the Christian Union spends its money, get in touch with the treasurer for more information.
