Social Action
"The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." Matthew 25:40 "
It is impossible to comfort men's hearts with the love of God when their feet are perishing with cold." William Booth
Hey! We're the new Social Action Reps for 2008 and we are...
Danielle Westbury [Street Project] (dw531), Laura Holland (ljh519) and Rhiannon Lews (rl534) "
"Isn't it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?" James 2:17 (The Message Remix)
We believe that one of the most important aspects of our faith is demonstrating God's love to all people. So, as Social Action Reps, we aim to encourage and inspire people to get more involved in local and global issues. To do this, we are trying to put on a range of projects to reach out to people on campus, in the local community and the universe in general! This year we will be continuing with the homeless project (now called the "Street Project"!) and Operation Christmas Child, plus organising some new stuff for you guys to get your teeth into! Please read on to find out what we're going to be up to, and if you have any ideas or suggestions you can contact us.
Training
The Social Action team provide training for all those wanting to go out on the homeless project. Please lookout for training days or contact Danni.
Isaiah 58:6-8 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice... to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked, to clothe him and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? The your light will break forth like the dawn..."
Your small group should be making a shoe box this term! The website (www.samaritanspurse.uk.com/occ/) has the list of things you can and can't use so check out the link, or talk to one of us or your small group leader.

Galations -14 "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: 'love your neighbour as yourself'"

Social Action Prayer
We believe prayer is a vital and powerful tool; your prayers for the Street Project and us will be greatly appreciated! Each week we meet to pray for the project and other social action issues in at 9am in the Quiet Place. Come and join us, to pray for social action, and the Street Project. The Street Project
The Street Project happens on Monday and Friday nights. On each of these nights we meet to pray together and then go out onto the streets taking food, hot drinks and some warm clothing to give to people we meet. Our aim is to get alongside these people in friendship and reflect our faith in our actions and words. Depending on the number of people we also have a group which prays whilst others go out. If you would like to help in anyway, or if you just want to receive the weekly prayer updates, details are sent out each week via email, to be on this list contact either one of us on dw531. Donations of fleeces, blankets, hats, socks, gloves and scarves are very welcome!Training

Operation Christmas Child
"Operation Christmas Child sends a message of hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes." Operation Christmas Child is a fantastic opportunity for us to show God's love in a practical way, and it is so easy to make your contribution!Your small group should be making a shoe box this term! The Besom Project
The besom project helps to provide people in York with things that they need. Check out the website link below. This year most of the colleges have done a Besom project, which usually involves doing something like painting a flat for someone in need, or sorting out an overgrown garden for someone who is unable to do it themselves. Doing a besom project is a great way to directly serve God by serving people in need. It’s also a great way to get to know other people in your college better. So ask your CRep for more information about whether your college is doing a Besom project this term. Alternatively you can contact the Besom project directly to get involved by helping out on their van run, or you can get a group of friends together and do a project! Follow the links on their website to get in touch.
Student Action
Student action has some fantastic options for volunteering to get involved in. As Christians it is great for us to serve God alongside other students, and there is so much that you can get involved in. Check out the Student Action website and tables at Fresher’s Fair to find out more.SPEAK
Speak is a national network of groups praying and campaigning against issues of injustice. The York group meets weekly to chat and pray together about things such as poverty and environmental issues, and are currently planning their campaigns for this term. Check out the SPEAK website to find out more, or email rl534 if you would like to come along to the York group. The Stand
The Stand is a big Christian event being held at the NEC in Birmingham, aiming for Christians ‘to stand together’ against injustice and human trafficking. The line up includes; Delirious, Tim Hughes, Jon foreman, Andy Hawthorne and Steve Chalke. We are hoping to organise transport together. Email rl534 for more information.Links
