The Structure

Where the CU is at now...

  • Amazing!
  • Good numbers across colleges and main CU.
  • True friendship and real community occurring in ways that are fairly new to CU.
  • Colleges thriving and ‘family’ ties are strong.
  • And main CU is the place where intercollegiate strength, unity and central/focus place is found.
  • Also main CU providing great teaching, communal worship and strong ‘body of believers’.
  • However: Awareness that main Saturday night CU is becoming increasingly ‘church’ like…

We are THE church, not A church

So why are we not a church??

Because…

  • United around our love for Jesus; belief that he is the way to being saved; and a collective desire for York Uni campus to hear the good news…
  • Therefore we don’t take a stance on ‘secondary issues’ that a church would have clarity and definition on.
  • As a body we invest in student leadership. Instead of having a group of elders, we work hand in hand with a wide range of local churches.
  • We are inter-denominational!
  • Church membership is a life long thing – CU membership sadly isn’t! Therefore churches are important!
  • Churches have a specific set of skills that comes from spiritual maturity and training/education, that we do not have.

So if Saturday night meetings aren’t a church service what are they??

  • Provide a source of teaching that is specifically relevant to students.
  • Provide fellowship and community (very important!)
  • Meet to worship God in the heart of campus – which is awesome and powerful witness!
  • Acknowledge and be challenged that as current students at York Uni, campus and other students are our ‘mission field’.
  • Good opportunity to hear a wide range of speakers, that wouldn’t be possible just from one church.

So what structure is the CU going to take?

The structure…

Each term normally has 9 weeks. These weeks are going to be split into the following:

  • 4 ‘Teaching’
  • 3 ‘Equipping’
  • 2 ‘Evangelistic’

(This may vary depending on the term. i.e. the first term has the first welcome week and also Houseparty.)

Teaching

  • What you might expect.
  • Expositional bible teaching, following a theme/book.
  • Building block of all we do – will provide us with understanding on why we want to share the gospel.
  • Knowing more about who God is leads us to want and share that with others!

Equipping

  • Practical relevant lifestyle applications to help us live as continual witnesses and evangelists at all times.
  • Areas of life that are relevant to students, from people who have specific knowledge and skills in that area.
  • Still strongly based in and from the bible.
  • Examples from this term … honouring God in our academics…
  • Learning how to put our thirst for telling people about God (which comes from the Theology ones) into action.

Evangelistic

  • Doing it!
  • Different types of events across uni, with friends, in colleges …
  • Big style, everything done with evange focus
  • Reaching those who do not know our Great and Glorious God!

A cheesy diagram – I couldn’t resist sorry…!
